Wairarapa economic development conference punches above its weight

Convening local economic development professionals in the Wairarapa for regionally focussed discussion has proved a run-away success. Delegates from around the country have signed-up for the two-day conference at Carterton Events Centre, Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 August. Greater Wellington Regional Council's Economic Strategy office joined with Wairarapa's three district councils earlier this year to put on the event - primarily to enable local discussion towards building resilient local economies.

"The two day economic development conference has drawn wider interest than wed anticipated. It's a real bonus attracting delegates from across the country. Bringing together a broad range of thinking, learning from other people's success and discussing ideas will create just the vibrant 'think tank' we'd like," says Colin Drew, Wellington Regional Strategy office.

"I am excited to learn more from our speakers and take away some inspired thinking for Wairarapa and the wider Wellington region. Resilience is a real focus for us across greater Wellington - building economic, environmental, community resilience is an exciting space to be in."

Speakers include well respected economic commentator Shamubeel Eaqub, Anna Guenther founder of PledgeMe as well as local woman, and nationally recognised business leader, Mavis Mullins.

Wairarapa's agricultural base is driven not only by primary production but also supports developments in farm-focussed software, light engineering and irrigation. The conference will provide an opportunity to profile some of these local activities to a national audience. And experience the local tourism and hospitality sector.

"There is always room to work smarter and making the important connections between training agencies, industry demand, budding entrepreneurs, neighbouring centres of excellence or industry. Inspiring business and economic growth as well as looking at any barriers that can be removed for the Wairarapa and further afield is an exciting prospect."
